  • 1482 > Guillaume de La Mark, nicknamed the " Wild boar of the Ardennes ", murders Louis de Bourbon, prince-bishop of Liège; it is the beginning of the revolt that he is going to lead in Liège, in favour of Louis XI. (it ended in 1485)

  • 1483 > Death of Louis XI, the " universal spider "; accession of his son Charles VIII, aged 13 (d. in April, 1498)

  • 1496 > Thomas Linacre becomes Doctor in Medicine at Padua

  • "1522 > Erasmus presents the reader with St Augustine's " De Civitate Dei ", edited by Vives and dedicated to Henry VIII. In the book 2, Vives quotes Lucian's " Necyomantia " in More version, and takes occasion for a length and vibrant eulogy of More

  • 1525 > The 'Treaty of the More', negociated by Cardinal Wolsey, was agreed by Henry VIII and Louise of Savoy, who was acting as regent while Francis I was emprisoned by Imperial forces. He had been captured at the battle of Pavia. It was an about-face for Wolsey as he had, in the recent past, been allying England with the Empire, rather than France. By the terms of the treaty, Henry VIII agreed to help secure Francis I's release, and to give up claims to several French territories. In return, France was to award England with a pension of £20,000 per year. The treaty was known as the Treaty of the More because negotiations took place at Wolsey's property in Hertfordshire, 'The More'.

  • 1534 > Death of Thomas Belchiam, Observant Franciscan friar and Catholic martyr. The twenty-eight year-old friar was starved to death at Newgate Prison. Belchiam had allegedly called the King a heretic.
