June 15, 2010 - Moreana vol.47, No 179-180 has just been released

Here is one more double Moreana issue, released on time, this June 2010. The double issue testifies to the wealth of material proposed by scholars to the journal. This Moreana collects a great part of the work that was done for the seminar on More’s early works, which took place in November 2009 at the Center for Thomas More Studies...

By publishing researchers' articles on the subject this Moreana issue also brings reflections on the debate More-Cromwell which recently came back on the table following the publication of Hilary Mantel's novel, Wolf Hall.

RSA’s Annual Conference in Venice - April 8-10, 2010
by Marie-Claire Phélippeau, Moreana Editor
The Renaissance Society of America is an enormous affair! They count over 3000 members, and this Conference was the biggest ever, with 2500 registrants! This means that 50 papers were given at the same time. Imagine going to a session at 9 am and then having to rush on a vaporetto to another part of town for the next session at 11:30. Fun for most but harsh on others. However everybody enjoyed the scenery and the incredible décors of some of the rooms. The Amici sessions took place first on San Giorgio Maggiore island at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, a lovely convent which is not open to the public. We felt privileged. This feeling was reinforced on Saturday, when, for our second session, we were accommodated in the Biblioteca Marciana, on the Piazzetta San Marco, just across the Doge’s Palace.

Sébastien Castellion - Nanterre Conference April 15-16, 2010

Marie-Christine Gomez-Géraud invites us to attend this conference.
Sébastien Castellion (1515-1563), has caught the attention of scholars especially thanks to his writings on the freedom of thought, and this has led to a great number of publications over the last century. Yet, his place in literature has not been seriously considered up to now.
However, the amount of writings left by Sébastien Castellion is considerable, if unevenly studied, the critics having essentially focused on the militant texts written during the various episodes of Michel Servet's defense, and having often only considered the intellectual personality of a Protestant outside the established Churches.
As a result, the literary aspect of his work was long kept in the shadow, even if The Newly Translated Bible (1555), dubbed by poet Jacques Roubaud “the masterpiece of French Literature” has recently been a novel object of study.

Société Française Shakespeare – 2010 Annual Conference
11-13 March 2010, Paris, a brief report by Marie-Claire Phélippeau.
“Shakespeare and the City”
The Conference proposed a panel of 16 speakers, who tackled the topic of Shakespeare and the City, from many different angles. Historians gave their views on the evolution of the City of London in Shakespeare’s time, classicists on the roots of Shakespeare’s language concerning the city, remarking on the difference between the violent urban scenes actually shown on stage, in Shakespeare’s theatre and only reported in speech in Sophocles and Euripides.
Literary analyses pointed at the poetic and metaphoric role of walls and city gates, at the feminine symbol of the city besieged. A number of papers established an interesting bridge between Shakespeare’s plays and today’s theatre or cinema productions. For instance, the women of “Sex and the City”, the American series may well reproduce some of>...

December 18, 2009 - Moreana vol.46, no 177-178 has just been released

The particular ambition of this Moreana issue, besides its usual harvest of diverse essays and book reviews, was to explore Night and Mysticism, a topic proposed to authors with two aims: on the one hand an assessment of More’s mysticism, a comparison with some contemporary mystics, and on the other, an exploration of the poetry of obscure nights.
Over half a dozen authors have responded with captivating articles, to be discovered in this December 2009 issue. Other essays concern: Mary Bassett – More’s grand-daughter; Erasmus and Budé on the « merits of being obscure » ; or More’s conception of the Orient, the magical word which used >...

Nov. 2009 - Amici at Noyon, Calvin's birthplace
The year 2009, which celebrated the 500th anniversary of John CALVIN’s birth, was the occasion of a great number of events, to which the Amici Thomae Mori were  regularly invited. The latest such event took place successively in Lille, Amiens and Noyon from November 25 to 27, 2009.
The general topic “Calvin and Humanism”, or the more particular “The Picard Calvinists in the 16th century”, allowed for excellent papers, among which some given by scholars belonging to our association:

     - Marie-Christine Gomez-Géraud, a member of Moreana’s Scientific Committee, spoke about Calvin’s Treatise on Relics and recalled that Thomas More was the only humanist who defended this popular cult.
    - Guy Bédouelle, o.p., rector of Angers’ Université Catholique de l’Ouest, also a member of our Scientific Committee, gave a lecture on Lefèvre d’Etaples.

The Dallas Seminar on More and Pico – 6-7 November 2009
The Annual seminar held at The Center for Thomas More Studies at the University of Dallas was devoted to More’s Life of Pico and Earliest Works (1493-1510).
It consisted of a Socratic seminar in which about 20 people took part, each of them having contributed an essay, read beforehand by all the participants. This form of seminar allowed for interesting discussions around some points of debate such as More’s possible intentions in his modifications of the original texts he chose to translate.
A number of essays will be chosen for publication in the forthcoming Moreana issue – due in Spring 2010.

LAMBETH REVISITED
Timothy Radcliffe is a Dominican spiritual writer and Catholic apologist well-known on both sides of the Channel. His latest book is entitled "Why Go To Church ?" : a pertinent question in these times of post-conciliar liturgical mayhem, through probably not one that Thomas More would have thought of asking, except perhaps on the occasion of Anne Boleyn's coronation.

The book is published by Continuum Books  in London.

By invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, the book's launch-party took place in the Great Hall of Lambeth Palace, the very spot where Thomas More refused to take the Oath of Supremacy in 1535, and was attended by many eminent dignitaries, including the Archbishop of Westminster and the author.

In reaction to our pointing out this interesting coincidence, the following lapidary reply was received :

June 2008 - => Order Now - More, Shakeapeare & the Englih Renaissance

More's influence on the English Renaissance is significant. Our modest purpose here is to suggest some cross-currents between his life and work, later writers, and contemporary events.
In addition to looking at historical and dramatic cross-currents, we examine the Catholic legacy of poet and preacher John Donne and his family ties to Thomas More.

This humanist, familiar with Janus Dousa, Tallis and Byrd, and Abraham Ortelius, was the master of Lancelot Andrewes and Edmund Spenser.
Supporter, like Thomas More, of the instruction of girls, he was in favour of sports after the manner of Mercuriale.

June 2007 - => Order Now - Exile
This issue on " Exile " marks for our Journal the completion of a refoundation phase undertaken over the last two years, with all the rewards and possible shortcomings it carries with it.
MOREANA will be able to maintain its identity only if it satisfies two criteria: pursue its ambition to spread Thomas More all over the world and, to that end, publish in his own native English, without excluding other languages. This double ambition has not fully been achieved so far.
This is the reason why, for the time being, we have chosen to slow down the publication of thematic issues and give priority to articles and reviews, in particular those written in English, centered on Thomas More himself or his world.

Publication of MOREANA issue nb 166-167
April 2007 - => Order Now - The publication of this latest issue of MOREANA carries on the thematic approach and deals with cities in the age of More.
To tackle a problem which is as fundamental for More's contemporaries as it is for us today, we wanted to offer an exceptional issue.
Its somewhat unusual lenght, even for a double issue, can be explained by the choice we made not to limit ourselves to the Renaissance but to give an overall view in order to analyse thoroughly the impact of the 16th century ideas on today's society.

October 2006 - => Order now - The same inside front cover names the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and William Gentrup, who made No. 161 possible. january 2007 - => Order Now - This is our fourth cummulative Index, following nos 40, 81 and 120, which have proved immensely useful to hundred of scholars.
These pages were compiled by Myriam Lefort, a graduate student at l'Université d'Angers, as early as 2005. As our Centre was being suppressed, Friedrich-K. Unterweg kindly offered to produce the Index in his own Moreanum.
It is imperfect, of course, your corrections or additions are even more welcome than congratulations.
